MEET THE OWNER OF THIS RESTAURANT!

Lisa Shepard, owner of Chicago’s Pizza in Spencer, Indiana, moved to Putnam County in the 90s. She loved the small-town feel of the area, so she raised her family in Owen County, where her son attended Spencer/Owen Community Schools from kindergarten through graduation.

She partnered with the Ellettsville location in 2011 and opened the Spencer location with Craig Schwartz in 2015. Craig, a silent partner, retired in 2017, making Lisa the sole owner.

The Spencer staff has a special rapport with its guests. They build relationships even though they may only interact with people once a week. They remember guests’ names and the guests remembers ours.

“It’s a nice feeling to be close knit,” Lisa said. “I’ve been with Chicago’s for over 15 years. I’ve seen children grow up to become guests themselves. Some people I’ve worked with are doctors, radio DJs and teachers. Chicago’s is a stepping stone for your future. It truly is an amazing experience with beautiful souls at every corner.”

Their pizzazz extends beyond outstanding relationships to outstanding pizza. The local fan favorites? Pepperoni and Skyline Pizzas.

“I couldn’t imagine doing anything else,” said Lisa. “I live the American dream every day! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for my family. I hope that I influence someone to follow their dreams from waitress to CEO.”

Beyond making amazing pizza, the Spencer crew is keen on community building. From supporting nonprofits, policemen, local charities, food banks, sports teams and schools, the Spencer location is a major source of community engagement. They participate in contests that benefit local residents—from community-wide Easter egg hunts and 15-days of giveaways at Christmas, to Christmas in July Chicago Style and Reverse Trick or Treating.

“With the guidance of Craig Schwartz, Bob McDonald (founder) and Dave Childers (current CEO of Chicago’s Pizza franchises, I have learned kindness and faith is more important than profits.” Lisa said.

“Chicago’s Pizza in Spencer is centered on community. Though we may not be a huge location, we give big. We try to better the Spencer area when we can.”
